How to look your best for a job interview

There is so much to think about when going for a job interview – will they like me? What if I say the wrong thing? And while everyone dreads the unexpected questions that can come up, one thing you can control is your appearance. Some job interviews require you to be more formal than others but it’s important that you always look smart, tidy and clean. This is key to making a positive first impression and showing your potential employer that you’re a reliable employee that takes care of themselves and their appearance. Knowing that you’re dressed to impress will also give you an added confidence boost.

So if you have a job interview coming up and you’re wondering what’s acceptable to wear or how to remove sweat stains from your shirts, check out the following tips:

Make sure your hair is tidy
There’s nothing worse than looking like you haven’t brushed your hair or had a shave for a few days. Make sure that your hair is clean and neat – that may mean combing it through with some product and making sure that it’s not in your eyes, or putting it up if it’s long. For guys, facial hair should either be shaved or trimmed with a beard trimmer. This important detail will make all the difference to your overall appearance.

Dress appropriately
This means looking respectful, smart and professional. While this may not be how you normally dress, it’s important to dress as formally as you can, depending on the job you’re going for. Sometimes this may require a suit or a shirt and tie – use your own judgement to decide what is appropriate for the job.

Wear clean clothes
One of the worst things you can do is turn up to a job interview with dirty clothes or a shirt that hasn’t been ironed with visible stains on it. Prepare your interview outfit a couple of days in advance, and make sure that it’s washed and ironed. You should also look out for any stains on your intended outfit that need to be removed. If you’re wondering how to remove sweat stains or marks left by food, there are many detergents and products you can use to can get these out. Shirts can be particularly prone to stains, so it’s important that you are clear on how to remove sweat stains and food residue well in advance, as you might need a couple of days to get rid of them.

Get your make-up and accessories right
If you’re a fan of wearing lots of jewellery and make-up, you’ll need to rein yourself in a little for a job interview. For girls, a little make-up is fine, but the phrase ‘less is more’ definitely applies. Avoid lipstick in excessively vibrant or unnatural colours and heavy eye make-up, as this will look unprofessional when you walk into your interview. Both guys and girls should avoid statement jewellery and remove visible or facial piercings unless they’re discreet. Although piercings and make up are often acceptable in the workplace, it’s best to avoid them at interview stage, as they could be seen as off-putting.

While every job interview is different, it’s best to play it safe and look as professional as possible. That doesn’t necessarily mean that this is how you will have to present yourself at your future job, as there’s often flexibility around dress codes. But when you walk into the interview room for the first time, it’s all about making that great first impression – and being smart, clean and presentable is the way to do it.
